Course further information

This two-day workshop offers structured and pragmatic training in academic English for researchers from all academic fields. Participants will get first-hand experience in English academic writing through guided instructions, analysis and active writing, and thus develop strategies for competent and successful publications in English.

The workshop is divided into four modules. Module I lays the groundwork, illustrating the characteristics and idiosyncracies of good academic English through the analysis of examples and brief writing exercises. Module II demonstrates how to turn English into a useful research tool, and offers hands-on experience in writing the major parts of academic texts, such as proposing theses, organising and presenting arguments, introducing and evaluating sources. Module III applies the principles and strategies introduced in Modules I and II to the participants' own texts (e.g. abstracts, introductions, passages from their dissertations), and offers guided instructions in how to improve them. Finally, Module IV turns from training to coaching, giving participants the opportunity to revise and fine-tune their texts in partnerwork and in exchange with the trainer. Throughout the two-day course, participants will thus get a comprehensive overview of the challenges and possibilities of academic English.

At the end of the workshop, participants will have (1) produced a revised text in academic English, (2) expanded their understanding of its formal conventions and (3) received further instructions for honing their writing skills. Hence, the workshop will generate new research opportunities for doctoral and postdoctoral researchers and strengthen their academic profile in a world in which academic bilinguality is a major prerequisite.

The trainer will receive text samples from the participants, which will be evaluated and discussed during the workshop. Alternatively, participants can send abstracts or short proposals for their research projects.
