courseFurtherInformation

In this Data Carpentry Workshop (https://datacarpentry.org) we will teach foundational data science skills. During four half-days (8:15 till 12:00) we will cover how to work with spreadsheets using Excel (or LibreOffice) and tabular data using OpenRefine, how to interact with relation databases using SQL, and the basics of how to program in Python.

We will start by having a look at good practices for and possible pitfalls while creating spreadsheets. Though we use Excel to demonstrate, you can follow along with LibreOffice as well.

Next we will work with OpenRefine. We will learn to import data, find and correct errors, transform data, and eventually save and export our cleaned data.

Then we will go on to learn how to use the Structured Query Language (SQL) to query relational databases.

Finally, we will learn to program in Python; from the very beginning. We will work toward writing our first Python script.

During the course you will type and click along, following the instructors; for SQL and Python preferably on your own machine. Please reach out to us, if you need help installing LibreOffice (https://www.libreoffice.org/download/), OpenRefine (https://openrefine.org/download.html), DB Browser for SQLite (https://sqlitebrowser.org/dl/) or Python (https://www.python.org/downloads/). If necessary, you can also use the on-site computers that have the required software preinstalled.

You can also attend only the courses on the individual topics. If you wish to do so, please register accordingly:
