Enhancing communication skills in academia goes beyond formal presentations and academic writing; it encompasses the art of small talk. This one-day workshop aims to equip participants with the skills necessary to engage effectively and confidently in informal conversations within academic settings. We will discuss prior experiences with and challenges of small talk, followed by language related input and practice sessions including role-plays and partner/group work. The workshop aims to endow participants with the essential linguistic and interpersonal skills needed to thrive in informal scholarly exchanges. Participants will learn to navigate small talk's complexities, recognize its cultural variations, and leverage these interactions to cultivate academic relationships and collaborations.

- Expand Lexical Resource: Broaden your academic and colloquial vocabulary to articulate thoughts precisely and engage in diverse conversational topics typical in academic settings.
- Refine Listening Skills: Improve your ability to comprehend spoken English, including idiomatic expressions and socio-cultural nuances, thereby facilitating smooth, effective exchanges.
- Discussion Strategies: Develop strategies to initiate, sustain, and elegantly close small talk conversations in English, focusing on politeness conventions and interactional dynamics typical of the C1 level.
